Seminar Descriptions:

The Plight of the Bees - Nick Grisafe, Syngenta

This session covers Colony Collapse Disorder, bee decline in the news, bee colony biology, neonicotinoid insecticides, regulatory protection of pollinators, label changes for protection of bees, new EPA Bee Box, IPM practices, and the PMP’s responsibility.

A healthy respect for spiders - Greta Binford, Ph.D.

Spiders are everywhere in our worlds. The fear they evoke is to some degree well-reasoned given that they are tiny, elusive, venomous predators. However, the value of spiders is incalculable as they play critical roles in maintaining ecosystem balance and their silks and venoms inspire new drugs, pesticides and biomaterials. Navigating the relationship between humans and spiders is complex and should be done with clear understanding of the risks and benefits of spiders. In this talk I will discuss some of the things I find inspiring about spiders, in particular the chemicals in their venoms. After a general introduction, I will focus specifically on spider diversity in the Pacific Northwest and discuss the known risks of spiders in this area, including hobo spiders.

OSHA Update for Pest Control Operators - Roy Kroker, Oregon Occupational and Safety Administration

This presentation addresses three different sections of Oregon’s OSHA rules including consultation, enforcement and technical aspects. Mr. Kroker will help pest control operators understand what to expect from an Oregon OSHA consultation visit, how to request one. Also, the sessions covers what to expect from and enforcement visit and ways to make that experience more educational. The session cover the types of questions that the Oregon OSHA Technical Section can answer for PCOs. There will also be an open question and answer period.

Rodent Harborage, Reduction and Exclusion - Dan Schlegel, Bell Labs

This session covers destruction and disease, rodent biology, behavior, inspection tools and inspection techniques. Extensive time will be spent on harborage reduction and exclusion including gaps, vegetation, sanitation issues, tools and techniques for rodent proofing structures, and monitoring.

Bird Control Basics - Jeffrey A. Weier, Sprague Pest Solutions

This presentation will discuss the basics of structural bird management. Mr. Weier will discuss the different pest species and some of their relevant biology. He will discuss the best practices for exclusion, repelling birds and dispersing existing populations. The primary focus will be on protecting structures. Some techniques that will be discussed include netting, spikes, electrical systems, light flashing systems and methyl anthranilate dispersion. Also, he will cover how to select the most effective system and some if the implications dealing with native species.
